Sinterklaas (also known as Santa Claus) is a mythological figure who is an important figure in Dutch culture and tradition. It is celebrated mainly in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and in some regions of Germany, France and Poland. Sinterklaas is a character similar to Santa Claus, but has slightly different characteristics. According to tradition, Sinterklaas arrives in towns and villages in the Netherlands every year on December 5, just before Saint Nicholas Day (Dutch: Sinterklaas Dag). He is said to travel on a white horse named Amerigo. Like Santa Claus, Sinterklaas is considered a good-natured figure who gives gifts to children. Traditionally, children put their shoes or socks in front of the fireplace or door, and Sinterklaas leaves gifts or sweets in them at night. Many cities also hold parades featuring Sinterklaas, where children can see him in person and give him their letters of greetings.
